  • General Motors and LG Chem team up to advance toward an all-electric future, add jobs in Ohio: General Motors and LG have worked on electric vehicle technology such as most of the innards of the Chevy Bolt EV. This announcement is about what will be GM's Gigafactory - but of course they're not going to use that name. Meaning, GM and LG Chem (just like Tesla and Panasonic) will build a factory in which to manufacture a large quantity of battery packs. Having a large factory for this purpose will bring down battery costs. LG Chem had previously received US federal funding for a battery factory in the USA, to supply cells to GM for the Chevy Volt. The new factory will be in the Lordstown area, which has been a point of contention between GM and the Trump Administration. The factory will be new construction rather than reusing any existing facility GM has in that area. GM sold its earlier manufacturing complex to "Lordstown Motors" for the purpose of building battery-electric trucks.
  • Hyundai Motor Group, Canoo, to co-develop all-electric platform for future electric vehicles: Hyundai and Kia (Hyundai Motor Group) are looking to an outside partner, Canoo, to develop an electric vehicle platform for Purpose Built Vehicles. Canoo has developed a so-called skateboard vehicle that can be scaled in several directions, and can be paired with any cabin design. The skateboard presumably has the battery pack and drive train as a platform, and a vehicle manufacturer designs a passenger cabin to fit on the top.
  • Volkswagen breaks ground on expansion for electric vehicle production in United States: For a long time the only means to owning an electric vehicle was to build our own. That meant getting training, either by reading books on EV conversion, talking in online forums, or taking classes. In some cases high school shop classes taught electric vehicle conversion. But, as Volkswagen says, the new era of electric vehicles requires a new era of shop classes.
